Your mind is part of the surgery too
Hypnosis for Surgery & Medical Procedures
Surgery asks a lot of you. Even when you trust your medical team completely, even when you know it's necessary, even when everything goes to plan, the experience of preparing for an operation, going under, and recovering on the other side is one of the most demanding things a human body and mind go through.
What most people don't realize is that your mental and emotional state going into surgery has a measurable effect on what happens during it and after it. The fear, the anxiety, the bracing, these aren't just feelings. They change your physiology. And hypnosis can change them.
What your mind does to your body before surgery
Preoperative anxiety is extraordinarily common. And it isn't just uncomfortable. Research shows that higher anxiety before surgery is associated with increased pain after surgery, greater need for pain medication, slower recovery, and more complications.
When you're frightened, your body responds as if it's under threat. Your heart rate rises. Your muscles tighten. Your pain sensitivity increases. You go into the operating room already braced, which affects how you come out.
The good news is that this is exactly the kind of response hypnosis is designed to address. Not by suppressing what you feel, but by genuinely changing how your mind and body are responding to the situation.
What the research shows
This is one of the most well-researched applications of hypnosis in medicine, and the findings are striking. A randomized controlled trial of 203 women undergoing breast cancer surgery found that a single brief hypnosis session before surgery resulted in significantly lower postoperative fatigue, lower emotional distress, and meaningfully reduced use of post-operative pain medication compared to a mindfulness control group. All of these benefit benefits from a single hypnosis session.
An analysis of over 190 studies on psychological preparation for surgery found that 80% of patients showed significant benefits including quicker recovery, fewer complications, less post-surgical pain, less need for pain medication, and an average of one and a half fewer days in hospital.
Research on cardiac surgery patients has documented benefits including reduced anxiety, less pain, lower medication consumption, shorter time on ventilator assistance, and faster recovery time. One hospital in Belgium now performs a quarter of all breast cancer surgeries and a third of thyroidectomies under local anesthetic combined with hypnosis rather than general anesthesia. Drug use, recovery room time, and hospital stay were all significantly reduced.
The evidence is not subtle. Your mental state is not separate from your surgical outcome. It is part of it.
Before the procedure
In the sessions before your surgery or procedure, we work on reducing anxiety and preparing your mind and body to go in as calm and settled as possible. This includes working with any fear about the outcome, about pain, about anesthesia, about loss of control. We build a mental state that supports rather than undermines the process.
Many people find a significant reduction in the stress leading up to the surgery once they have the support and preparation that hypnosis can provide. The dread lifts. Sleep improves. They go in feeling ready rather than braced.
After the procedure
Recovery is where hypnosis may be even more valuable. Your mind plays a direct role in how your body heals. Studies have shown that people who use hypnosis during recovery experience faster tissue healing, reduced pain, lower need for medication, and better overall mood and wellbeing during what is often an exhausting and disorienting time.
We work with the suggestions your mind needs to support healing, manage discomfort, improve sleep, and help you feel more in control of a process that can otherwise feel completely out of your hands.

Reducing fatigue and emotional distress during recovery
-
Improving sleep and restoring a sense of stability and control
Who this is for
This is for anyone facing a planned surgery or medical procedure, whether it is minor or major, whether you are anxious about it or simply want to prepare as thoroughly as possible. It is also for anyone in recovery who wants to support their healing in every way available to them.
You don't need to be in crisis to benefit from this. Some of the people who benefit most are simply those who understand that the mind and body are not separate, and want to use everything available to them.
